Major refurbishment of Clacton Leisure Centre changing rooms set to begin next month
23rd March 2026
Gym-goers and fitness fans will soon benefit from a major £433,000 refurbishment to the fitness changing rooms at Clacton Leisure Centre.
Tendring District Council (TDC) has appointed contractor Re-gen (UK) Construction Ltd to overhaul the first-floor fitness changing, shower and toilet areas, which are currently out of use, at the council-run facility in Vista Road.
A total of £500,000 has been allocated to refurbish the changing rooms as part of the ‘urgent repairs’ element of the wider £3.75million budget for the first phase of works that are set to include a new Ride and Play Zone, funded through the Government’s £20million Community Regeneration Partnership programme in partnership with TDC.

Councillor Mick Barry, TDC’S Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said the revamp would be welcomed by fitness fans who use the popular facility.
“We know how important these facilities are to the people who use Clacton Leisure Centre, so this refurbishment will be a really welcome improvement for our gym-goers and fitness class regulars,” he said.
“The changing rooms have been out of action for some time and bringing them back into full use will make a huge difference to local people’s experience at the centre.

“This upgrade is part of the wider £20million Community Regeneration Partnership investment, which is all about improving facilities, boosting local pride and supporting healthier lifestyles in Clacton-on-Sea and Jaywick Sands.
“By using external funding and managing the project carefully, we’re able to deliver high-quality improvements that support our communities for the long term.
“The works will completely overhaul the first-floor fitness changing, shower and toilet areas, giving residents modern, clean and accessible spaces to use once again.
“Thank you to everyone for your patience while we make these changes happen.”
Works are scheduled to begin in April and are expected to take around 18 weeks to complete. Customers will be kept fully updated about any disruptions during this time.
This project is in addition to the £1.36million scheme to replace Clacton Leisure Centre’s ageing oil fired boilers with a modern, eco friendly heating system and new solar panels, funded through the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme delivered by Salix.
